Rules of Composition

1. Rule of Thirds
image divided into nine equal segments. line up subject of photo with lines or intersection points.

2. Balance
off center is creative, but can cause photo to be unbalanced. balance the weight on both sides/top and bottom.

3. Lines
eye is draw along lines. lines show movement, depth.

4. Symmetry and Patterns
same on both sides, very eye catching. repetition.

5. Point of View
high angle vs. low angle. can give entirely different meaning to a photo.

6. Background/Foreground
watch out for busy background, think badly placed, etc.

7. Depth
has foreground, midground, background. looks 3 dimensional.

8. Framing
placing objects (natural framing like trees) around the subject to draw attention.

9. Cropping
similar to framing. eliminate background noise. get in closer to subject.

10. Break the Rules
sometimes things need a little rebellion in them.
